The Indonesian Geological Disaster Agency said that the volcano of Mount Merapi on the island of Java released hot clouds on its slopes on Thursday.
The Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center, which monitors the volcano, said the lava flow – a fast-moving mixture of extremely hot rock fragments, gas and ash – had reached a distance of two kilometers on the ground up to a nearby river.
There were no reports of injuries.
McEwan, head of the local Civil Protection Agency, said more than 100 residents living near the mountain had been moved to temporary shelters after a series of similar explosions on Wednesday.
Hundreds of residents fled their homes near the volcano to safer locations after the more recent eruptions, but many have since returned.
Indonesia is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for seismic disturbances, and contains about 128 active volcanoes.
The 2,968-meter-high Mount Merapi volcano has erupted several times since 2018
Its last fatal eruption was in 2010, when it killed more than 340 people and displaced more than 60,000. It is the most active of the 127 volcanoes in Indonesia.
