Confrontations broke out with police and looting took place Sunday in several Dutch cities during demonstrations to reject the curfew imposed since Saturday to combat the outbreak of the Covid-19 epidemic, according to Dutch media and local authorities.
The public NOS television reported that the police used a water hose and deployed trained dogs in the Museumplein square in the center of Amsterdam, where hundreds of people were demonstrating.
In Eindhoven in the south of the country, security forces used tear gas to disperse a crowd of hundreds, according to the local TV station “Omrop Brabant”.
Cars were set on fire and shops were looted at Eindhoven Central Station, the station added.
City police told Agence France-Presse that “at least 30 people were arrested,” stressing that they had no toll of possible injuries.
The Dutch Railways Company asked passengers to “avoid” Eindhoven Central Station, as trains stopped traffic due to the intervention of ambulance teams near it.
A COVID-19 testing center was also set ablaze on Saturday evening in the northern town of Urk, with the curfew coming into effect nationwide, according to local authorities.
“The burning of the testing center in Urk goes beyond all limits,” said Health Minister Hugo de Wenge.
On Saturday, the Netherlands began its first curfew since World War Two. Exit is forbidden between 21:00 and 04:30 until at least February 9th.
