Today, Thursday, US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi refused to announce the date of referring the indictment against Donald Trump to the Senate in the case of “incitement to rebellion,” a necessary step to launch the second historic impeachment trial against the former US president. “It will be done in a short time. I don’t think it will take long,” Pelosi said during her daily press conference. “But we have to do it.”
On January 13, Donald Trump became the first president in US history to be charged twice in the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives. More than 230 Democrats and 10 Republicans voted in favor of this “impeachment,” accusing the billionaire of inciting his supporters to attack the Capitol on January 6th. The Senate, now in the hands of the Democrats, must organize an impeachment trial, but negotiations are still ongoing over its duration and what. Pelosi said, “I do not want to tell you when” the indictment will be referred to the Senate, adding, “We should wait for it to convene, and they have informed me that they are ready to receive it, but questions remain about the organization of the session.”
Pelosi stressed that “we are ready” in the House of Representatives to refer the decision. Trump’s trial in the Senate threatens to hinder the Biden administration’s work and the legislative procedures that the Democrats intend to pass at the beginning of his term, since the Senate cannot constitutionally, if seated as a court, do any other work before this trial ends.
Pelosi said, “I will talk to the prosecutors” of the House charged “to find out when the Senate is ready to go to trial.” Although few Republicans have criticized Trump on the issue, the outcome of his impeachment trial remains unknown. After he denied his defeat to Joe Biden in the November elections, Trump delivered a speech to the White House on January 6, as Congress convened to approve the results.
At the time, he told his supporters, “You will never take our country back if you are weak. You have to show strength and you have to be strong,” calling on them to demonstrate “peacefully and patriotically.” Shortly thereafter, demonstrators stormed the Capitol in an unprecedented attack that killed five people.
